Why This Time is Different

A friend sent us an e-mail after the market closed on 11-19. The message was simple, yet full of meaning: "S&P support - what a pleasant memory..."

Yeah, we've got a bad feeling about this, and there don't seem to be any Jedi hanging around anywhere these days to save the Universe from the emperor and his clones, so it looks as if the market, and the rest of us are on our own, depeding on charts to navigate these increasingly treacherous waters.

Yesterday I went into a local bank. Some guy working there I knew in high school stopped me on the way out. He wanted to know what I was doing in the market. He looked nervous. Maybe he was worrying about his 401k.

Two More Months At Same Rate Of Decline Could Mean Zero Growth

China's industrial output is starting to slow, and could grind to a halt in two months if it doesn't change trajectory, throwing more ice on the notion that a quick recovery is in the cards for the global economy.

According to Bloomberg: "Production rose 8.2 percent from a year earlier, the smallest gain in seven years, the statistics bureau said today. None of 18 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News predicted such a small increase. Output grew 11.4 percent in September."
